Four Prayers for the Political Moment

Jonathan Kerhoulas | November 5, 2024

Fear Not

Be still, and know that I am God.

I will be exalted among the nations,

I will be exalted in the earth!

–Psalm 46:10

Loving Father, in our stillness we acknowledge that You are God and we are not. You, who will be honored by every nation and generation, be honored in our hearts and homes this day. Amen.

Heaven’s throne is occupied.

At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne.

–Revelation 4:2

Loving Jesus, we are grateful for the rights and privileges that are ours as citizens of this country. And we praise you for making us a citizens of the only unshakable kingdom—the kingdom of God. Amen.

“My peace I give to you.”

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

–John 14:27

Lord of peace, amidst the pundits and politics of the moment, may the background noise of our lives be steadied by your heart-guarding, mind-centering peace. Amen.

Wash their feet.

If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.

–John 13:14

Loving Jesus, on the cross, you laid down your life for others: for the rebel other, the foolish other, the sinful other—for me. May our love for others across the aisle be a reflection of your costly love for us. Amen.
